IC 5070 (an official designation) is divided from the larger [4]North America Nebula by a [5]molecular cloud filled with dark [6]dust. The deep [7]featured picture from [8]Utah, [9]USA incorporates 25 hours of exposure and brings out great details of this [10]filamentary dust. The [11]Pelican Nebula receives much study because it is a particularly active mix of [12]star formation and evolving gas clouds. The light from young energetic stars is slowly transforming the cold gas to hot gas, with the [13]advancing boundary between the two, known as an [14]ionization front, visible in bright orange on the upper right. Particularly dense [15]tentacles of cold gas remain. Millions of years from now, the [16]Pelican Nebula, bounded by dark nebula [17]LDN 935, might no longer be known as the Pelican, as the [18]balance and placement of stars and gas will surely leave something that appears [19]completely different.
