The Ghosts of Five Supernovas Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Stephane Vetter, [4]Yann Sainty Text: [5]Cecilia Chirenti ([6]NASA [7]GSFC, [8]UMCP, [9]CRESST II) Explanation: The ghosts of five supernovas haunt this extraordinary [10]image. It was acquired at [11]Oukaïmeden Observatory in [12]Morocco with approximately 200 hours of observations and shows a large patch of the sky, equivalent to the [13]area of one thousand full moons tiled together, in the constellation of [14]Auriga (the [15]charioteer). From left to right, the five supernova remnants visible across the field are [16]G181.1+9.5, [17]G182.4+4.3, [18]G179.0+2.6, [19]G180.0−1.7 (Sh2-240, the [20]Spaghetti Nebula), and [21]G178.2−4.2. They are highlighted in the [22]annotated image, together with [23]open cluster [24]M37 and the [25]Tadpole Nebula. As each explosion [26]expanded into space, it created a growing shell of shocked gas and delicate filamentary structures shown in red ([27]hydrogen) and blue ([28]oxygen), respectively. These ancient stellar explosions happened independently; they are at various distances up to about several thousands of [29]light-years away from Earth and have estimated ages up to [30]tens of thousands of years old. Early humans may have [31]witnessed them as bright new stars, fading over weeks or months. APOD's email for image submissions has changed. Please see: [32]APOD Submissions.
