        DS1821 Development Kit

This DS1821 Development Kit Program Disk contains the
following files:

  README.TXT  -- This information file.
  DEV1821.EXE -- The development kit executable file.
  DEV1821.C   -- Source code for the development kit program.
                 This was developed in Turbo C.

Program Requirements:
  o  MS-DOS v5.0 or later
  o  Parallel/printer port
  o  Development programmer hardware (supplied with this disk)

To Install

Note: This Kit runs under DOS only. Do not run from Windows!

1. Connect the DB25/RJ11 adapter to a parallel port on an 
IBM-compatible PC. Plug the cable from the DS1821 
development board into the RJ11 jack on the DB25/RJ11 adapter.

2. Create a new directory on your hard disk for the program files.
		
		Example:	C:> mkdir ds1821

3. Copy the program files from the floppy disk to the newly 
created directory.

		Example:	C:> copy A:*.* c:\ds1821\*.*

4. Make sure you read the README.TXT file (this file) for 
additional information and late-breaking news regarding this 
development kit.

5. To run the program, type

			C:>\ds1821\dev1821.exe

Before running the program, the user should connect
the demo hardware to the parallel/printer port.
While the program is running, the user should
not use any other programs that might access that
parallel/printer port, and nothing else should be
connected to the same port that the hardware
is connected to.

Normally, DEV1821.EXE does not require any
command-line parameters.  However, if there are
any problems accessing the part in the program and the 
user knows which port number the
hardware is connected to, the program can be
sent a parameter '1', '2', or '3', to specify
LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3.  For example,

                DEV1821 2

would specify communication on port LPT2.  Since
the program prompts for the correct port on startup, 
the command-line parameter is normally not required
(nor is it of much use).

Warning, especially to laptop users:  Some
computers have special power-down/energy-saver
modes that disable the parallel/printer port.  In
order to use this kit, the port must be enabled.

Regarding Source Code:
The C source code for this kit is provided in the 
DEV1821.C file. Note that this code depends upon the 
special parallel port adapter provided in the kit, which utilizes 
Dallas' DS1480 1-wire master to generate the 1-wire timing. 
Please refer to the schematics for the DS1821 development 
kit for details on how this hardware is used, and the DS1480 
datasheet for details about that part's operation.  The DS1821k
schematic and DS1480 datasheet can be downloaded from our
website at http://www.dalsemi.com.

DS1821 Sockets:
The DS1821k demo kit is shipped with a socket for the PR-35 
(DS1821) package and one for the TO-220 (DS1821T) package.  
The demo board is laid out to program the 8-pin SOIC (DS1821S) 
as well, but the kit is not shipped with this socket.  The respective

Future developments
The DS1821 Development Kit is intended for engineering
prototype use, and is not to be considered a production
programmer. For users who need to program moderate numbers
of DS1821's, Dallas is developing a gang programmer which will
be capable of programming up to 32 parts at a time.

For higher volume production use, our DS1620 products are
supported by System General's Turpro series of universal 
programmers. System General is currently considering support
of the DS1821 as well. For more information about System
