Intel(r) Ultra ATA Companion
Alpha Release 3/22/99

***********************************************************************
** The Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver development team developed this
** application for you, our customers - please let us know what you
** think of the application. We are open to suggestions as to how we
** could improve the tool. Please send us your feedback!
**
** Specific feedback we would appreciate:
** 1) Is the tool useful for you?
** 2) Does it run properly? Have you seen any problems?
** 3) Any ideas for new viewable/changeable parameters?
** 4) What method would you recommend for pre-configuration, i.e.,
** OEM-preset default parameters <to be implemented in next
** release>
** 5) Would you like your customers (end-users, corporate
** customers) to have read/write access, or read-only

0. System requirements
======================
- Intel chipset containing PIIX, PIIX3, PIIX4, ICH, or ICH0 components
- Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver v2.05.1 Alpha or newer
- Microsoft* Windows NT4.0 Service Pack 3 or 4
- ...and... the ability to send feedback as soon as possible!

1. Overview
===========
The Intel Ultra ATA Companion is intended to be used on systems
containing the Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver. This tool queries the
Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver via the driver's IOCTL interface, to
obtain detailed information on controller and device configuration.
Additionally, the tool can be used to set controller- and/or device-
specific configuration parameters by updating the system registry.

This tool will eventually be contained within the Intel Ultra ATA
Storage Driver Installation package; this forthcoming new installer
will install both this tool and the Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver in
an automated fashion.

2. General usage
================
When run, the Intel Ultra ATA Companion displays an icon and device
name for each device connected to each connection of the Intel Ultra
ATA controller's Primary and Secondary channels. Selecting the
controller or a device causes the application to display configuration
parameters in the window on right side of the application window.

By default, the Intel Ultra ATA Companion runs in READ-ONLY mode, and
only allows the user to view parameter settings for both the controller
and all connected devices.

By holding ALT+I at any time after starting the application (NOTE: the
Intel Ultra ATA Companion application must be in focus), the
application mode changes from READ-ONLY to READ/WRITE, and allows the
user to additionally configure controller- and/or device-specific
configuration parameters. Subsequent ALT+I keypresses toggle the mode
from READ-ONLY to READ/WRITE.

To change a controller/device parameter, simply double-click the
parameter in the "Parameter" column of the "Parameters" window - this
causes the "Edit Parameter" dialog to appear. Next, choose a value in
the "Parameter Data" pulldown and select "Ok" to change the value, or
"Cancel". If "Ok" was chosen, the newly-chosen parameter value will
show in the "New Value" column of the "Parameters" window. Multiple
parameters may be changed before the final step of selecting the
"Update System" button at the bottom right-hand corner of the
application window. NOTE: Controller/device parameter changes do not
take effect until the system is restarted.

3. Viewing/changing Intel Ultra ATA Controller parameters
=========================================================

Selecting Intel Ultra ATA Controller in the left window displays the
controller's configuration parameters in the right window:

Static parameters (not user-configurable):
------------------------------------------

Name: Chipset
Desc: Intel Chipset product name

Name: Driver
Desc: Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver version

Configurable parameters (when application is in READ/WRITE mode):
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Timeout
Desc: Max time Microsoft* O/S will wait for devices to respond to SCSI
commands (default is MS O/S-specific, approx. 10 seconds),

Name: UDMA on 80 conductor cable only
Desc: Specifies if UDMA0-2 transfers shall only be performed if an
80-conductor UDMA cable is present <not yet implemented (default
       will be NO - allows UDMA0-2 on 40-conductor cable)>

Name: Flush Enable
Desc: Specifies if run-time hard disk drive write cache flushing
shall be performed, by request of Microsoft SCSIPORT stack
(default is Disabled - no run-time write cache flushing)

Name: AutoConfiguration
Desc: Specifies whether the BIOS or Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver will
       configure the devices.

Name: UseLbaMode
Desc: Specifies whether the Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver will use
CHS only or whether CHS and LBA can be used.
